Frequently asked questions

What are Vela & Pegasus HH LIBS Analyzers?

Vela and Pegasus Handheld LIBS analyzers are the two models of LIBS represented by Lynx Test and Measurement LLC. They are portable instruments with battery power that can provide elemental analysis of metals and alloys of various specifications. These analyzers serve as great complementary products for Handheld XRF devices and offer a field-friendly alternative to OES (optical emission spectrometers)

How do Vela and Pegasus work?

They utilize highly focused laser pulses to vaporize and ionize testing subject, creating a high-temperature plasma that emits characteristic light. By analyzing this emitted light, Vela and Pegasus provide the elemental composition of the testing subject, especially lighter elements such as Carbon and Lithium, which a handheld XRF instrument cannot measure.

How much does it cost?

Both Vela and Pegasus are priced extremely attractive. Lynx Test and Measurment LLC is devoted to providing the best solutions to customer of all budgets. The efficiency gained and the return on investment (ROI) from owning Vela and/or Pegasus are unmatched by many other instruments targeting the same market.

What's the difference between Vela and Pegasus?

Vela is designed as the light weight (only 2.75lbs) portable unit for a broad range of alloy bases and elements. On the other hand, Pegasus incorporates Argon purging into the system, enabling the measurement of 0.001% or 1000 PPM level of Carbon in stainless steel. This breakthrough capability allows inspectors to distinguish H and L grade stainless steel.

Can the Pegasus HH LIBS be used for Lithium Mining Applications?

Absolutely! The Pegasus handheld LIBS analyzer emerges as a game-changer in the lithium mining industry, providing unmatched capabilities for rapid qualitative and quantitative material analysis. Miners no longer need to wait for laboratories to provide Lithium content data; with Pegasus, they can determine the lithium content within ores such as spodumene, amblygonite, lepidolite, and petalite.

What's the Argon requirement to use Pegasus and where to obtain the supply?

It's recommended to use 99.99% pure Argon when using Pegasus analyzer, especially when low detection limit is critical. Lynx Test and Measurement offers Argon canisters for low-grade carbon analysis. Additionally, Pegasus can be equipped with an adapter and a larger bottle of Argon without the need of changing out the canister after 200 measurements.

Case Study 2:

For highly stable and repeatable results, an analyzer needs to maintain a constant temperature. This presents challenges for portable instruments like the Pegasus and Vela Handheld LIBS, which must operate in temperatures ranging from 100°F to 30°F below freezing.

To address this, we customized a cozy leather jacket for the instrument during winter for one of our customers in Northern Europe. This solution reduced the need to draw extra energy to heat up the internal cavity, resulting in over 25% longer battery usage during winter conditions.

Now, this Winterizing Solution is available for purchase in Lynx Test and Measurement’s company store.

Our customer in Korea sought an automated solution to enhance throughput and minimize human error. After consulting two other vendors, both of whom declined to provide a solution, Vela took on the project.

By incorporating an automated robotic arm, we successfully conducted Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) tests, delivering a comprehensive elemental composition analysis of the sample tube at a remarkable throughput speed of 8 samples per minute.

Moreover, we not only supplied the customer with an API package but also seamlessly integrated the chemical analysis results into their Quality Management System. This efficient and cost-effective solution met our customer’s needs.
